Purpose: The unique experiences of men who have sex with men MSM residing in culturally conservative rural areas are not well represented in the scientific literature. The human immunodeficiency virus HIV epidemic in the United States has shifted toward rural areas where populations are dispersed and health care resources are limited. Methods: We recruited 40 sexual minority men, ages 22—66, residing in rural Oklahoma for in-depth, qualitative sexual health interviews that sought to understand how cultural and social environments impacted health behaviors. Findings: Participants described a stigmatizing social environment and less access to quality, sexual minority medical care within rural communities and perceived these as substantial barriers to enhancing health.

    Bisexuality - Wikipedia

Previous social and behavioral research on identity among bisexual men, when not subsumed within the category of men who have sex with men MSM , has primarily focused on samples of self-identified bisexual men. Little is known about sexual self-identification among men who are behaviorally bisexual, regardless of sexual identity. Using qualitative data from 77 in-depth interviews with a diverse sample of behaviorally bisexual men i. Three primary themes emerged: 1 a resistance to, or rejection of, using sexual self-identity labels; 2 concurrent use of multiple identity categories and the strategic deployment of multiple sexual identity labels; and 3 a variety of trajectories to current sexual self-identification. The relationship between sexual identity and sexual behavior within much of the research and practice of public health considers the former important in terms of its relation to the latter. Much has been written about sexual identity formation among lesbian and gay individuals, and to a lesser extent, bisexual individuals.

Neural Correlates of Sexual Orientation in Heterosexual, Bisexual, and Homosexual Men

Bisexuals, who account for about four-in-ten LGBT adults in the United States, stand apart from gay and lesbian adults in many ways, such as the fact that they are less likely to view their sexual orientation as central to their identity. The experience of coming out to friends and family can be complex. Among those who did come out, bisexual adults report somewhat different experiences from gays and lesbians. Gays and lesbians are somewhat less likely to report being solely attracted to one gender. This is likely due at least in part to the fact that LGB adults make up a small share of the overall adult population, so the pool of potential same-sex partners is much smaller than the pool of opposite-sex partners.

Bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction , or sexual behavior toward both males and females, [1] [2] [3] or to more than one sex or gender. The term bisexuality is mainly used in the context of human attraction to denote romantic or sexual feelings toward both men and women, [1] [2] [8] and the concept is one of the three main classifications of sexual orientation along with heterosexuality and homosexuality , all of which exist on the heterosexual—homosexual continuum. A bisexual identity does not necessarily equate to equal sexual attraction to both sexes; commonly, people who have a distinct but not exclusive sexual preference for one sex over the other also identify themselves as bisexual. Scientists do not know the exact cause of sexual orientation, but they theorize that it is caused by a complex interplay of genetic , hormonal , and environmental influences , [10] [11] [12] and do not view it as a choice. Bisexuality has been observed in various human societies [15] and elsewhere in the animal kingdom [16] [17] [18] throughout recorded history.
